US Paper and Paperboard Production, 2000


Every year, about 90 million tons of paper are consumed in the United States. Thats about 700 pounds of paper per person.

For worldwide industrial uses, every purpose besides fuel wood, 42% of harvest wood goes to paper paper reduction. Of that 42%, about two thirds of the wood is harvested specifically for pulp. The other third comes from mill residue like sawdust leftovers and wood scraps.


87% of the world's printing and writing paper is consumed by industrialized nations with 20% of the world's population.


The global production in paper, pulp and publishing sector is said to be expected to increase by 77% from 1995 to 2020.


The single largest water consumer in industrial activities in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development) is the pulp and paper industry. The pulp and paper industry is the third greatest industrial green house gas emitter, after the chemical and steel industries

From the world's paper supply, about 71% of the paper is not made from timber harvested at tree farms but instead from a forest harvested timber. These forest have regional economical and environmental value, making a diverse habitat for its inhabitants.
